Stand-Up Pouches 101: Structures, Barriers, and Lamination Options Explained
Stand-up pouches are one of the most versatile and fastest-growing flexible packaging formats. But the lamination structure you choose determines shelf life, printability, heat-seal performance, and cost. Here's a practical guide to the major options.
OPP/MCPP
Oriented polypropylene over cast polypropylene is the most common structure for dry snack foods, confectionery, and pet treats. It offers excellent clarity, good moisture barrier, and a cost-effective price point. Not suitable for products requiring oxygen barrier or extended ambient shelf life.
PET/PE
Polyester over polyethylene provides higher temperature resistance, better dimensional stability, and good printability. Widely used for microwaveable products, retort pouches, and applications requiring a stiffer structure. The PET layer accepts high-quality rotogravure printing with excellent color reproduction.
Foil Composites (PET/Foil/PE)
Aluminum foil laminate provides the highest barrier performance available — blocking oxygen, moisture, and light. Essential for coffee, pharmaceutical products, high-value food items, and anything with a shelf life requirement beyond 12 months. The premium is real but so is the protection.
